Next Global Milonga: Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012.

The Global Milonga amplifies the phenomenon of social tango connection both inwardly, by dancing across time zones to the same music, and outwardly, by planting trees to nourish the planet we all share. This balance represents tango as a transformational force in our world. Just as individual couples benefit when they join the ronda of the dance floor, so too our individual communities prosper by giving to nurture the earth. In just two years, Global Milonga has donated over $20,000 to support crucial reforestation projects in Latin America.

Practically speaking, simultaneous tango events are synchronized by online streaming audio and video, each event donating 75% of total sales or 100% of profits to support critical reforestation projects through our partner organization Trees for the Future. Dancers tango to the same music at the same time and live video is projected onto the walls of local venues and streamed on this website.

The theme song of the Global Milonga is Tierra Querida: Beloved Earth, a tango recorded by the orchestra of Julio De Caro whose lyrics describe an idyllic homeland, and we've chosen our date to coincide with National Tango Day in Argentina. The Global Milonga demonstrates our collective power to create the world we wish to live in. Our choice to support reforestation is inspired by the precedent set by Oxygen Tango School of LA, with their impressive policy of one tree per dancer.

Our environmental partner, Trees for the Future, is a nonprofit organization developing community-based agroforestry projects in Africa, South America, and Asia. Their local teams plant trees at a rate of less than 10 cents per tree. That means just $10 plants 100 trees! We chose to partner with Trees for the Future because of their community-based approach, which mirrors our experience of tango as a community-based art form.
